2027 Medicare Advantage Exits Affect 600,000 Members

There’s no question that changes in the Medicare Advantage landscape can feel unsettling, especially as we look ahead to 2027. One major insurer has announced targeted exits that will impact approximately 600,000 members. For anyone affected, it’s important to remember: your Medicare eligibility isn’t going away. If your plan isn’t renewed and you don’t actively choose a replacement, you’ll generally return to Original Medicare by default.

The main enrollment period to review and select new coverage options runs from early to mid-Q4, with changes taking effect in early Q1. There’s also a special window that extends into mid-Q1 for certain situations. Notably, moving back to Original Medicare may open a special Medigap enrollment window—beginning 60 days before your current coverage ends and closing 63 days after. This can be a rare opportunity to secure supplemental coverage without underwriting.

When weighing your options, I always encourage a close look at the details: provider networks, hospital access, prescription formularies, copays, deductibles, and the true out-of-pocket limits. Sometimes a $0 premium can mask much higher annual costs elsewhere. Free, unbiased counseling is available through state assistance programs, and double-checking your choices—whether with Medicare or a qualified advisor—can help you avoid any gaps in coverage.

After decades helping families and business owners navigate the complexities of Medicare, my approach is rooted in careful planning and complete transparency. Whether you’re considering a move or simply want to understand your options, let’s make sure your coverage keeps working for you.
